Obama-Devil Resemblance on 'The Bible' Sets Off Firestorm

(Update: The producers of "The Bible" say the suggestion that any link is intentional is "utter nonsense.")
The resemblance between President Obama and an actor who plays the devil on History's "The Bible" has drawn more than a little notice.
Conservative commentator Glenn Beck was among the first to take to Twitter to point out the resemblance between Obama and actor Mohamen Mehdi Ouzaani. A slew of tweets and news stories ensued, many from Obama supporters who weren't pleased.
History did not immediately respond to a request for comment from TheWrap.
In the miniseries, the actor resembles an older version of the U.S. president. Last year, HBO's "Game of Thrones" came under criticism when its executive producers said in a DVD commentary that a fake head of President George W. Bush was impaled on a spike in one scene.

"The Bible" has been a huge hit for History, drawing 13.1 million for its first episode and 10.8 million for its second. It is executive produced by "Survivor" creator Mark Burnett and his wife, Roma Downey, who plays the Virgin Mary.
Last week, one of the executive producers of "The Bible," Scott Sassa, resigned as Hearst's entertainment and syndication president after what the New York Post described as a sexting scandal involving a stripper.

'The Bible' Ranked as Most Watched Cable Entertainment Telecast of 2013

By Katherine Weber , Christian Post Reporter
March 4, 2013|7:18 pm

The highly anticipated 10-hour miniseries "The Bible" hit the ratings jackpot on Sunday when it premiered on the History Channel, garnering over 13 million viewers in the U.S., making it the No. 1 scripted program on television.

"The Bible" miniseries, created by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, earned a 6.7 household rating/10 share on Nielsen Ratings' overnight report, according to Variety, thus beating CBS' "The Good Wife" and even CBS' "60 Minutes," which came out on top for the broadcast networks with 11.9 million.
Additionally, for much of last night, the television show was trending on both Twitter and Google.
According to a statement issued by Nancy Dubuc, president of Entertainment and Media at the A&E Networks, which owns the History Channel, "The Bible" is now the number one cable entertainment telecast of the year 2013.
"The success of 'The Bible' has catapulted [the History Channel] into one of the most powerful brands across media landscape and we could not be more thrilled and more proud," Dubuc said in a recent statement.
"We are the #1 cable entertainment telecast of the year to date! Leading into the premiere we had the best day ever on History.com, and 'The Bible' trended #1 on Twitter. Clearly there is a nationwide groundswell that was waiting for this moment," Dubuc continued.

"We launched an incredible and coordinated campaign – [the History Channel] worked hand in hand with Roma and Mark and their talented team. An enormous debt of gratitude goes out to everyone and the amazing effort put forth to drive us to this amazing win. Clearly the passion for this project has resonated with our viewers and across the nation. We are thrilled, and the story is only just beginning.".
Sunday's airing of "The Bible" took viewers from the very beginning of biblical teaching to the Ten Commandments, and will pick up where it left off next Sunday at 8 p.m. EST.
The show was produced by Hollywood power couple Mark Burnett, who previously produced "Survivor" and "Celebrity Apprentice," and his actress wife, Roma Downey, of "Touched by an Angel."
"We could not be more thrilled with this out of the gate success," said Downey and Burnett in a statement to Entertainment Weekly.
"The world is watching right now and we are incredibly humbled by the reaction to the series. This No. 1 series is a tribute to all those who have helped us to spread the Word. Ultimately 'The Bible' will be seen and felt by billions around the globe … Today, more people are discussing God's chosen people – Moses and Abraham – in one day than ever before," the couple added.
When previously speaking with The Christian Post, Downey called the miniseries a "passion project" for herself and her husband.
"I've loved Jesus all my life," Downey told The Christian Post. "It's a passion project for Mark and myself."

Nigerian Official Had Prior Knowledge of Church Bombing That Killed 20 Christians

Nigerian military authorities say the commandant at a military college in Kaduna state had prior knowledge of the Nov. 25, 2012 bombing that killed 20 Christians at the institution's chapel.

Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Isa knew of Islamic extremist plans to attack the St. Andrews Chapel at the Command and Staff College in Jaji, near Kaduna City, but did nothing to prevent it, according to Army Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika. At a press briefing earlier this month, the nation's Army chief said Isa did not report the planned bombing to Army leadership.
Isa, who was subsequently redeployed and then forced into retirement after a preliminary investigation, denies the charges.
Ihejirika said investigations are continuing to determine whether the Muslim military officer's silence about the planned bombing was an act of "negligence or a demonstration of his further involvement in the bombings."
Military authorities said an investigating panel reported that Iso had information about the suicide attack about 24 hours before it took place. It also recommended punishment for soldiers on duty when the suicide attack occurred.
Two Baptist pastors serving as chaplains at the church died along with 18 other Christian military officers, soldiers, and their families, when suicide bombers from the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram carried out a double-bomb attack on the chapel.

Boko Haram Members Arrested
Nigerian security officials say they have arrested two members of Boko Haram who were involved in the bombing, identified as Mohammed Idris and Ibrahim Mohammed.
Mohammed has reportedly admitted he was with two suicide bombers, identified as Tasiu and Mallam Lawal, as they went up to the gate of the military institution, where he bade them farewell before they detonated the explosives. The 18-year-old Boko Haram member also reportedly admitted that he procured the chemicals used in producing the improvised explosives devices that were planted in the two vehicles used in bombing the church.
Military spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar said Mohammed had also participated in several other attacks in Kaduna state, including the bombing of St. Rita's Catholic Church in Kaduna City.
"The suspect stated that Bashir Madalla sent Lawal, one of the suicide bombers, to Damaturu, Yobe state to retrieve military uniforms and weapons from the Boko Haram cell, and that Lawal wore the military uniform with the rank of a captain, which afforded him free access into the military formation in Jaji," she said.
Boko Haram Members on Trial
At the same time, six members of Boko Haram are on trial in Abuja in connection with two other church bombings.
Dozens of Christians were killed in the bombing of St. Theresa Catholic Church at Madalla, Niger state, on Christmas Day 2011, and in the July 10, 2011 bombing of All Christian Fellowship Mission at Suleja, also in Niger state near Abuja. On trial are Shuaibu Abubakar, Salisu Ahmed, Umar Babagana-Umar, Mohammed Ali, Musa Adam and Umar Ibrahim.
Witnesses have testified how the military recovered bomb production materials from them. Authorities also recovered mobile phone text messages to the terrorists from their leaders encouraging them to attack churches and other places, and promising them automatic entrance into paradise to be crowned and given 72 virgins each.
A senior military officer read the text messages, one of which states:
"Do a deed which Allah by his grace and mercy save you from the punishment of the grave and a dangerous bridge with the speed of light … Save you from the greatest fear and hell fire. 70 members of your family will marry you 72 virgins in paradise; give you a crown of respect which even the prophet will be impressed with."
The military officer also testified that another text message appears to include a code for arrangement and detonation of explosives on targeted churches and other public places. In addition, he told the court that the phones also had photos of the leaders of Boko Haram.
The Islamic extremist sect, whose name means "Western education is a sin," aims to impose a strict version of sharia (Islamic law) on the country.
Christians make up 51.3 percent of Nigeria's population of 158.2 million and live mainly in the south, while Muslims account for 45 percent and live mainly in the north. But those practicing indigenous religions may be as high as 10 percent of the total population, according to Operation World, so the percentages of Christians and Muslims may be less.

Pastor in Pakistan Released on Bail After Blasphemy Accuser Admits to Mistake

In a rare instance in Pakistan, a judge granted bail to a pastor accused of blaspheming Islam because the complainant admitted that he had mistakenly accused him, attorneys said.

Karma Patras, a 55-year-old pastor of Bado Malhi, Sangla Hill, had been languishing in Sheikhupura District Jail since October after preaching on Christ's sacrifice at a funeral attended manly by Christians. Some Muslims present thought he was speaking against the Islamic animal slaughter ritual observed at the time, and Patras was confused when police showed up at his home later that day (Oct. 13) and arrested him on charges of defaming Islam.
Victims of false accusations of blasphemy in Pakistan usually spend months in jail without trial, and then many more months after conviction; if charges are dismissed, it does not usually happen until cases reach appeal, as most trial judges cannot withstand the pressure of furious Islamic extremists. Retraction of an accusation is also rare in Pakistan.
"Patras' release is the rarest instance of a complainant in a blasphemy case retracting his statement," one attorney said.
Pakistan is nearly 96 percent Muslim, according to Operation World, and religiously charged court cases commonly involve clamoring crowds of Muslims and other pressures coming to bear on lawyers and judges. Christians make up 2.45 percent of the population.
After Patras' arrest, Muslim villagers forced his five married sons and their families to leave the area or be burned alive, an attorney told Morning Star News. They still do not dare to return to the village out of fear of attack.

The complainant in Patras' case, Syed Zulqarnain Shah, stated on Thursday (Feb. 21) in Sangla Hill Judicial Magisterial Court that he had mistakenly accused Patras of committing blasphemy against Islam and that he would have no objection if the pastor were released on bail.
The public prosecutor argued that Patras could not be released on bail due to Shah's retraction because the state was now the complainant in the case, the attorney said. The judge rejected this argument, saying that Shah was still the main witness so his statement was of pivotal importance. That Shah is no longer the official complainant in the case is presumably why the charges were not dismissed in spite of his retraction.
The Center for Law and Justice, an affiliate of the European Center for Law and Justice, is representing Patras in court.
Pastor's Arrest
Patras had been invited to address a funeral gathering in the village of Mehmandwali, Chak No. 111-R-B, Sheikhupura, in Punjab Province, on Oct. 13. Preaching at the bereaved family's house, he spoke of Jesus Christ's sacrificial death and resurrection. Someone asked the pastor if Christians could offer animal sacrifice, the attorney said.
Patras replied that Christ had sacrificed Himself once for all. Quoting Isaiah 66:1-4, the pastor cited verses stating that God esteemed one "who is humble and contrite in spirit … But whoever sacrifices a bull is like one who kills a man."
After the pastor returned home, only few hours had passed before police arrived and arrested him.
"The pastor was unable to make sense of why he had been arrested," the attorney said. "He believes that he was charged under the anti-blasphemy laws because the area Muslims bore malice against the family where he had delivered the sermon."
Saddar Sangla Hill Police Station charged Patras under Section 295-A of the Pakistan Penal Code for "outraging religious feelings." Conviction carries a prison term of up to 10 years and a fine.
After Patras's arrest, a mob of Muslims surrounded the police station and demanded that he be handed over to them, but Patras had already been transferred to another site. Unable to get Patras, it was then that area Muslims told his five sons to leave the village or else they would be set on fire, the attorney said.
The Christian community in the village, about 20 families, wept for the evicted families as they loaded their belongings onto tractor trolleys, he said. Since leaving the village, the five families have scattered to nearby villages.
Likewise, despite being released from jail, the pastor is living in another area, separated from his family; he fears for his life, and he does not want to jeopardize them.
A recent study by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) found that those acquitted of blasphemy charges face threats from homicidal vigilantes. Of 52 people murdered after being charged with blasphemy in Pakistan, 25 were Muslims, 15 were Christians, five were Ahmadis, one was Buddhist and one was Hindu, according to the CRSS report.
Sangla Hill was the site of mob violence in November 2005 after a Muslim accused Yousaf Masih of burning a Koran. Some 2,000 Muslims attacked four churches in the area. Masih was later acquitted after his accuser, Mohamed Saleem, admitted that he had not seen the Christian set fire to a building used to store copies of Islam's sacred book.
Area residents later said that Saleem had leveled blasphemy accusation after suffering heavy gambling losses to Masih.

The Sistine Chapel was closed to visitors as the Vatican's leaders prepare the famous chapel for the conclave, where cardinals from around the world will work to select a new pope.

Officials at the Vatican revealed that they are awaiting the arrival of five more cardinals before they would be able to begin the election process.
The chapel was closed at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in anticipation for the conclave to begin. Preparation of the chapel includes putting in a false floor where the cardinals with gather and also installing the stove where the secret ballots will be burned.
More than 100 cardinals attended the second day of preparatory meetings in order to organize the conclave as well as get to know one another ahead of the selection.
Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said he expected to be in the conclave in the coming days and that the reasons for the late arrivals of some cardinals were due to prior commitments.
Local reports indicate that for the second day of pre-conclave meetings, several of the cardinals asked for information about the management of the Vatican bureaucracy. They also asked about the series of allegations of corruption and cronyism in the Holy See's governance.

The official announcement from the Vatican revealed that the 85-year-old pontiff felt he was no longer able to carry out his duties as head of the Catholic Church due to his deteriorating health.
"After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry," Pope Benedict XVI statement explained.
The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII, who left his post in 1415 as part of a deal that went to end the Great Western Schism concerning competing papal prospects.

Honoring Christ by Sharing our Testimonies

by

We have recently set aside the first Sunday night of each month to hear the testimony of one church member, and have already benefited tremendously from these evenings together. I put together the following outline to explain the purpose of these testimonies in the life of the local church, and to offer some guidelines for preparing a testimony:
Honoring Christ by Sharing our TestimoniesCurve Baptist Church
I will tell of your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.Psalm 22:22
What is a Testimony?
A testimony is simply honoring the Lord by bearing witness to others about His work in your own life.
Examples of Testimonies in Scripture
The Lord commends sharing testimonies throughout His Word, particularly in the Psalms. We continually read of the Psalmist promising to tell of the greatness of the Lord “in the midst of the congregation.” Often, he asks the Lord to deliver him so that he can testify of God’s salvation. So many of the psalms exemplify this, but here are just a few examples: Psalm 22:22-24; 30; 32; 34; 71:14-24.
In the New Testament, the Gospels and the Book of Acts provide us with a number of examples of men and women who testify about what Jesus has done for them. (John 4:28-30; 9:8-25; Acts 4:13-22, Acts 22:1-21, etc.) The saints in Revelation 12:10-11 are said to have overcome Satan “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” Whatever the exact nature of this testimony, we know they were publicly identifying with Jesus Christ despite the opposition of Satan.
A principle emerges across the pages of Scripture: one of God’s designs in saving us is that we will in turn honor him by sharing our testimony with others.
The Value of Testimonies in the Church
Why should we regularly set aside time to share and hear testimonies? What is the value of these testimonies alongside the ongoing preaching ministry in the church?
Testimonies make Gospel truth take on flesh and blood. It is one thing to hear a sermon on God’s grace; it is quite another to hear a brother or sister speak personally of his or her experience of God’s grace. Testimonies invigorate and excite us as we are reminded that God is alive and at work in our midst.
The one giving testimony is obeying the Lord by “telling out his greatness in the midst of the congregation.” His soul also receives the benefit of reflecting slowly and intentionally on God’s hand of grace on his life from his earliest days until now.
The believers hearing the testimony are obeying the Lord by allowing their brother to testify to the Lord’s grace and goodness. They are serving their brother or sister by patiently and attentively listening and offering encouragement. These listeners are in turn stirred to praise the Lord for his work in the life of the speaker, and are moved to reflect on God’s work in their own lives.
The sharing of testimonies serves to bind the church together, as we open up our lives to one another rather than keeping one another at a distance.
An unbeliever hearing a testimony is pointed to Jesus as the living Savior of sinners.
A Few Guidelines for Preparing Your Testimony
If you are asked to share your testimony, you will not be able to say all that could be said about God’s work in you over the course of your entire life. So what should you focus on? Here are a few guidelines that will help you as you are preparing:
Take time to examine the Biblical examples of testimonies listed above, especially the detailed account of Paul’s testimony in Acts 22:1-21. What elements in Paul’s testimony are similar to yours? How does Paul point to Jesus with his testimony, and how can you do the same with yours?
Take time to reflect on how God’s hand of Providence can now be more clearly seen as you look back on your life. How was the Lord at work in bringing you to Himself from your childhood up to now?
Speak honestly about coming to an awareness of your sin, your neediness, and how you were brought to repentance by God’s grace (i.e., don’t stand up and say, “ I've always been a good person”). But this does not mean dragging listeners through the mud of a detailed account of your sins. The goal is not to see how “dramatic” your testimony can be; any previously dead sinner who is now alive in Christ has a plenty dramatic testimony. ( Eph 2:1-10)
Speak about coming to faith in Jesus Christ. Who did the Lord use in your life as influences to point you to Jesus? If you can pinpoint a certain moment of conversion, then talk about that. If you cannot pinpoint a certain time, then talk about that.
Speak about your life since you began following Jesus. What have been some of the major milestones along the way, whether struggles or victories? How does believing the Gospel continue to impact your life daily?
Speak about God’s ongoing work in your life right now. What is He teaching you? How is He challenging you? What role does the church play in your life?
Remember that Jesus should be the hero of your testimony. Above all, point the listeners to God and his grace, and not to yourself. Don’t focus on your old life of sin so much, or your new life of obedience so much, that Jesus is overshadowed.
